Comparison between empirical and theoretical biomass allometric models and statistical implications for stem volume predictions

چکیده
Comparisons between empirical and theoretical allometric models for estimating tree biomass and the statistical caveats attached to empirical stem volume equations are presented in this paper. First, the elastic and stress similarity models, derived from fi rst biomechanical principles, as well as predictions obtained from geometric similitude, were validated against allometric equations that relate dry above-ground tree biomass M to stem diameter D . In addition, a recent geometric model which predicts that M D 8/3 was also validated against a pooled dataset which consisted of 764 M D pairs compiled from empirical studies conducted throughout the globe and for several tree species. Moreover, 59 empirical equations which relate M to D were selected from a European database to validate the aforementioned theoretical models. The analysis indicated that the biomechanical and the geometric models failed to describe the shape in M D allometry for the empirical datasets. Finally, the multicollinearity problem, which is directly related to the reliability of the predictions, was analysed for stem volume equations ( V ). In total, 23 empirical models based on the six-parameter formula V = a + bD + cD 2 + dD 3 + eH + fD 2 H were used in order to pinpoint the dependency between the parameters. It is illustrated that parameters a , b and c are highly related to each other, and parameter e is also related to parameter f . It is concluded that the interrelationship between D and stem height ( H ) could be one of the reasons for this dependency and scepticism should be placed in the reliability of V estimates derived from these models.

Development of an allometric model to estimate above-ground biomass of forests using MLPNN algorithm, case study: Hyrcanian forests of Iran
This research develops an allometric model for estimation of biomass based on the height and DBH of trees in the Hyrcanian forests of Iran. An accurate allometric model reduces the uncertainty of allometric equation in biomass estimation using radar images. In this study, 317 trees were selected randomly from the 4 different dominant tree species for the development of an allometric model cover...
متن کاملEstimation of stem biomass of Pupulus. caspica and Pupulus. alba 57.58 seedlings based on allometric relations (Case study: Chamestan, Noor)
Today, the use of allometric relations for easy, non-destructive, low cost and fast estimation of tree biomass is widely used. The aim of this study was to estimate the stem biomass of Pupulus. caspica and Pupulus. alba 57.58 seedlings. First, 45 cuttings from both fast-growing tree species were selected and planted in a randomized complete block design with three replications in the lands of C...

Due to the importance of Acer monspessulanum in Iranian mountain forests, a study was carried out to reliably estimate its woody biomass and growing volume via allometric equations. Four transects, five trees in each were chosen randomly. The characteristics of standing trees including: diameter at root collar, height, number of stems and crown width were measured, then trees were finally cut d...
متن کاملAllometric Convergence in Savanna Trees and Implications for the Use of Plant Scaling Models in Variable Ecosystems
Theoretical models of allometric scaling provide frameworks for understanding and predicting how and why the morphology and function of organisms vary with scale. It remains unclear, however, if the predictions of 'universal' scaling models for vascular plants hold across diverse species in variable environments. Phenomena such as competition and disturbance may drive allometric scaling relatio...
